I believe I've read that the 50/1.4 was updated between the M
and A series lenses, and that formulation has continued through
the F and FA series. I have an A series version and find it to
be a stunningly good lens.

I also have a mint A50/1.7 and F50/1.7. What's interesting to me
is how different the f/1.7 appears to be at wide open aperture
compared to the f/1.4 (the f/1.7 seems a lot more
contrasty/sharper), but by f/2 it's difficult to tell them
apart. The f/1.4 has an edge on rendering, though, when it comes
to out of focus areas: a smoother, but not Gaussian boring,
transition to blur.
