I would suggest returning it and getting something else instead.
The Sigma 20mm f/1.8 is fast but its image quality wide open is
quite poor, plus it has a noisy slow focus motor. The Canon
EF20/2.8 is only about $30 more and is much better wide open.
Compared critically, the Canon lens hits its best stride
starting at f/4 and gets marginally better at f/5.6, the Sigma
doesn't get close to it until both are at f/5.6. 

The 17-40/4L he already has is a better performer than the Sigma
at f/4, about the same as the Canon 20 at f/4.
