Rob Studdert indicated I should be using a Crosspoint screwdriver to get the screws out of my defective lens. After asking for an explanation of the difference between JIS Crosspoint and Phillips I did an extensive net search and finally found the following information at http://www.pierfishing.com/tackle_tips/9911.html
Welcome, Powell. It's considerably more complicated than that, I'm afraid. I know of five commonly used crosspoint systems: Philips, JIS, Vessel, PK and Pozidrive. There are undoubtedly others. All have varying forms for the head and driver shape. Often you can get by with using a tool from one system on the head of another. Sometimes this just will not work. If a screw will not turn, the first thing to check is that you have a properly fitting tool. Stop sniggering at the back! This does not mean that it just goes in but that it fits with minimal gap. Often you can only do this by trying several and comparing. I won't tell you again! Only then can you evaluate which one is best.
