The D70 and the *ist D are the same price ($1000) if you consider
rebates. The *ist D has a real viewfinder (pentaprism vs pentamirror)
and a metal chassis instead of a plastic one.

The difference between 8mp and 6mp is pretty minor. The *ist D
resolution is 3008x2008 pixels. An 8mp 2:3 format camera would have a
resolution of about 3450x2300. If you consider that the *ist D makes
a very good 8x12 print (250 dots per inch) than the 8mp version would
give you a similar quality 9.2x13.8 print.

A 2mp jump is considerable when going from 3mp to 5mp (66% more
pixels), but isn't as exciting when going from 6mp to 8mp (33% more
pixels).
