I'd highly recommend "Old Path, White Clouds" by Thich Nhat Hanh. It's
the story of the life of the Buddha, assembled from various Pali,
Sanskrit and Chinese sources and translated into beautiful English
prose. I think even non-Buddhists would enjoy it.
