Well, to bring the topic around to photography, anyway: A photographer at our newspaper covered a local peace march Saturday and came back with the usual selection of photos. Tom sat down and picked one that seemed to be well composed and to illustrate the mood of the day.
Being a photographer, he didn't pay attention to the words on the signs people were carrying in the photo. Neither did the page designer. The photo ran at the top of page A-2 Sunday -- a big, clear picture of someone holding a sign that says in huge letters, "Bombing for peace is like fucking for virginity" Last I saw Tom this afternoon, he and the page designer were crafting a written letter of apology to be sent out to the many, many readers who DID, to their displeasure, notice the signs.
