Both Pentax and Ricoh build K-mount SLRs, so they can swap lenses. When
Ricoh and Pentax decided to add shutter priority and program modes, they
did it differently so Pentax KA lenses won't do Tv and P modes on a Ricoh
(just Av and M), and likewise Ricoh KR lenses won't do Tv and P modes on a
Pentax (just Av and M). Many 3rd party lenses have both sets of contacts.
Keep in mind most Ricohs just use the the standard K mount (no contacts),
only a few of the later models were the KR mount.
The advantages to the Ricohs is that they are cheap compared to Pentax, and
some of them are actually quite nice cameras. The XR-X3000 is a manual
focus camera with TTL, built in winder, spot meter, and other goodies.
There is no equilvent Pentax camera. The camera I have, the XR-S, is a
solar powered camera, with shutter speeds from 16s-1/1000, multiple
exposure, and aperture and shutter speed are both visible in the
viewfinder. A disadvantage to Ricoh is that they are not making 35mm SLRs
anymore so they can be harder to get repaired as parts become scarce. Many
of their later models feel cheap and plasticky (the earlier ones seem
pretty solid). Also, you will be snubbed by other camera geeks, especially
if you have a Sears varient.
