Philosophy:
In general, I use features and programs that are part of the operating
system before I look at third party solutions. Anyone who has bought a
digital camera knows how quickly Kodak, HP, Canon and Adobe can install
useless, contradictory and confusing imaging programs on your computer
(Picasa2 and Windows Imaging is the answer).
If I need a new feature or wish to tweak an existing one, I look for a
free solution. I've seen far too many machines where people have pissed
away hundreds of dollars, usually $20 or %50 at a time, on programs that
only duplicate existing Windows capabilities.
If you want Windows to behave differently, do a little research before
spending your lunch money, or just post a question here.
In the last 15 or so years I've spent exactly $19.95 on software other
than operating systems.
Google "essential free software" and you'll get lists like this one:

I can't explain Harold's obsession with attempting to control his
computer, but it's his and that's part of the fun for him. I'm sure,
however, that it's not necessary for a better computing experience.

Hello again,
I want to thank y'all (especially Clint and Hugh) for the contributions to the
"Cleaners" discussion (though that was not the subject). I have them all
copied and will review the different pros and cons. The different opinions,
(one prefers more, one prefer fewer) are interesting and now I have a new
malware cleaner called "Windows Defender". How any of them might have caused
the Quick Launch to disappear after rebooting I might never learn. I might
send the problem to Compaq for a solution. Now the other problem that
inadvertently came up in the QL talk:
After rebooting the computer, or clicking Refresh on the desktop, the desktop
icons all line up on the left side of the screen. They line up the same way
each time. Right-clicking the desktop > Show Icons, shows nothing checked
(except "Show Desktop Icons, otherwise they would all be hidden). Note that
checking any of the options does not eliminate this problem.
Now what I do, using "Icon Restore" (it's excellent and you'll find it here:
<http://users.rcn.com/taylotr/icon_restore.html> and it's free), I can
immediately "put 'em back the way they were" (name of a song in the Broadway
show some years ago called "Lil Abner). Crazy things do happen on this
computer ... the Quick Launch disappears, the desktop icons seem to have a
life of their own (always after I reboot the computer), nothing serious enough
to require a complete or partial restoration. Any ideas? --- Harold
