While the PC is booting you have told down either the F5 or F8 key, I
always forget which one. One will go right into safe mode which you don't
want. They other will present you with a menu where you can select the
Command prompt which will be the C: prompt.

Clint,

Forgive my ignorance but how do I get to the "C" prompt?

(Please do not remove the "Re:" from the subject lines of REplies :)

There are several things you can try. First, be sure you keyboard is
ok.....be sure nothing is pressing on one of the keys or none of the keys
are stuck. If you're sure it's ok, then try these, (given in no specific
order):

Go to the command prompt C:, run scanreg.exe and see if it finds any
errors.

Also at the command prompt run scandisk.exe (short version first) and see
if it finds any errors. If it does not, I doubt the long version would
help since I think it just additionally checks the ENTIRE disk even where
there is no data, but you may want to try it anyway. That will take a
pretty good while.

IN WINDOWS, also run scandisk and make sure you have "automatically fix
errors" checked. Start with the standard short version of it first as
well. Make sure you have nothing running in the background, or just run it
in safe mode.

Also in windows run MSCONFIG, go to "tools" and somewhere in there is the
registry checker, give it a shot.

Notice if it still happens while booting into safe mode. If not, the
problem is with a driver that is trying to load. If scanreg and scandisk
can't fix it, you'll just have to reinstall all drivers.

When did this start? Did it happen after installing or removing something?
If so you can narrow it down to that.

Bad command or file name

Then it proceeds to continue boot up..
