This is exactly why I wrote "try to be." We're human, not perfect and sometimes we err. And as far as what happened when the Hebrews came into Judea being bloody, I'm told that the two books of the Maccabees were left out of the Tanach not because there was any doubt of their historical accuracy, but because they're too bloody and violent, being the history of a rebellion and War of Independence.
There's an old joke that tells why, when three Jews get together you end up with five synagogues: one for me, one for you, one for him, that one in the valley we're all boycotting and the one on the hill that we can all compromise on.
