The "newsmaster", (the person who is apparently in charge of the Bellsouth's 
NNTP server) turned off the filter for a short period of time and I was then 
able to post replies in the normal manner, even if there were numerous IDs in 
the References lines.

So, you guys were definitely correct that it is an improperly configured 
filter. However, having discovered the problem isn't the same thing as having 
solved it. The newsmaster said he would work on the problem...
