Yeah, I seem to recall that when the rewrite started, he wanted to start with a fairly basic UI redesign and then add back in features that people thought were valuable. The back-end rewrite has been brilliant from a performance standpoint, too - one of the main reasons I'm using the new version rather than 0.14 - though I have to admit that I really miss the rules capability in 0.14.
