The thing is, I can see that the descriptions might be useful for 
unsub'ed groups as well as sub'ed groups.  If I were looking at a list of 
groups (like on forums.opensuse.org) and trying to decide which groups to 
subscribe to, a description (if the server presented it - that one 
doesn't, but is where the discussion came up and I realised that I'm not 
seeing it in pan-ng when it was there in old-pan) would be very helpful 
if the name wasn't entirely intuitive.
