Call me anal (go ahead, it's OK, you wouldn't be the first) but... I don't like seeing an "unread" count when I'm done reading a group. It just bugs the heck out of me. Most of the time, when I'm done reading a group, the unread count "just goes away on its own". When it doesn't "just go away" is when I have some filter set to ignore articles and there are some "new" articles that should be ignored as a result of that filter.
I realize that I could check the "mark entire group read when leaving the group" box in preferences, but occasionally, I may click on a group other than the one I meant to. I don't want to lose the "newness" of the articles in that group, but I also don't necessarily have the time "now" to read those articles. I realize that I can "mark group read" with a simple right click (and that's what I do now.) What I really want is for pan to treat those articles that I tell it to ignore as if they had never appeared at all (delete the headers, etc). What I'd be quite happy with is if "ignore articles" either "marked article as read" or had an option to do that (realizing that not everyone who wants to "ignore an article" feels the same way I do). I'm currently 0.125 on FC5 and MS'lose'dows. ISTR 0.14.x having something like this, or am I misremembering again?
