Hmm...  I wasn't even aware such a package (gtk2-engines-gtk-qt) existed. 
I certainly don't have it installed here on Gentoo (where a search reveals
it's gtk-engines-qt), and now that I know what sort of problems it causes,
I'm not about to install it!  Thanks for the confirmation that was it,
tho.  It'll help the next time something like this comes up.

BTW, I'm a KDE user as well.  Unfortunately, it seems knode doesn't seem
to have very active or enthusiastic development.  However, klibido works
quite well for binaries.  You may want to see if you've a package
available for that, particularly if you do multiple binary servers, as
it's a bit further advanced on that then PAN is.  It doesn't do text tho,
only binaries, but it does really go to town on them, and without the
memory issues PAN 0.14.x had on big binary groups, as well.
