I was able to do a successful backup to another shared drive on the network. That is how I got to know the size of the backup folder the backup process creates (Folder: spbr0001)
We are running MOSS backups as scheduled task job which runs a script/batch file with this command (stsadm -o backup -directory \\servername\share -backupmethod full) and this fails. If I point it to the network share where there is ample free space, the backup works successfully.
