I understand your point, but I'm also reminded that a purpose of opensource.com is to teach people about the open source way. That means not only the what and why but also the how. It's a bit of a chicken and egg problem, as evidenced by the fact that it's not that an uncommon situation for people to be confused how to leave a Mailman list. This is compounded by people being taught by email marketing software to expect the one-click-to-unsubscribe method, which makes sense in a situation where people are often not even sure how they subscribed in the first place.
