It isn't exactly the device goes to sleep. It is the internal controller of the enc that assume a low consumption profile for all the disks. When the enc controller receive some input from the pc it resumes the disks, same position.
Again, this mecchanism worked like a charm in OpenBSD and I can't think different in OI but the error messages. Waiting your eventual investigation about it.
