Like an idiot, I didn't think of that. When I tried to rebuild them, they got wiped out. :-( I'll keep this in mind if I do something like reinstall the OS from scratch again.

I've tried the gnu compiler, the SunStudio compiler, and they all fail.
In fact, when I run configure with CC=/usr/bin/gcc it quickly dies with:
configure: error: in `/data/build/cppunit-1.12.1':
configure: error: C compiler cannot create executables
