Just to wrap this up, I now have a beautiful OI desktop running from my USB stick. Thanks to everyone who offered their suggestions.
To summarize the solution for me was to change SATA to ATA in the BIOS, boot from the live cd, install to the USB stick, and always use it in the same port.
