Whoa people! all that was asked is :
Does anyone know if/how you can change the LAN settings in IE 5 and
above on win 98 SE via a script?
As we have 2 links to the internet and would like to change the settings in
one go.
Leave people to run their own shop. Why be concerned, you are covered.
Do not assume you know best for someone elses business requirements, because
clearly you do not.
Now back to the original question.
As there is no urgency.
Scope:
To change IE5 settings on users PC to point to other net connection.
Changes that need to be made are in the registry.
User must not need to log off.
App needs to be delivered to the user.
User will need to close down internet explorer
Possible options:
.reg file
This should not be too hard, export section(s) strip out the bits not
required (it is just a text file). email to user with instructions to double
click and run.
.bat script
not really useful
.WSH script
needs WSH installed on PC
.pl script (perl) with .bat to run. Perl is cryptic to code (
www.activestate.com <http://www.activestate.com> ) the :win32 libraries will
give you the reg tweaking functions you require. perl can be installed into
a common mapped drive and a batch file containing the command line to run
perl with the .pl file can be emailed. (we use this option for delivering
via login script)
wise installer
You could buy this and code up the reg teaks , compile and deliver as an
.exe (we use sms installer for delivering via sms)
In IE under tools options connections lan settings you have an option to
setup an auto configuration file. This may be a way to deliver it as well.
this is probablt explained in the IEAK

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ieak/techinfo/deploy/60/en/

I can't help you past that as I am not a coder. Could probably find some
source perl for reading registries tho .

Dean

There should be an urgency! This isn't 1985, it's 2001, and the world is
different. The risks of letting ANYTHING get to the desktop that a user can
run or execute and destroy not only your network, but cause complications on
others is a responsibility YOU have. Don't let users have dangerous access
to anything that comes over the internet. Scrub your files at the gateway!
Antigen works for me and many others on this list.

Suggest you export out the key bits of the registry you need to a .reg file
and email that to them to click on, I sense urgency here ??!!
do you have windows scripting host on the machines?

You let batch files go through you e-mail system? Why then are you worried
about having them log off, you're already courting disaster.

I dont really want to have to get the users to log out. I would prefer to
send them batch file via e-mail they can just double click on.

policies would be better than a script, just requires the user to logon
again once the change has replicated
