If it's not working, my normal suspicion would be that the associated service is not running. It has to be listening on the remote PC for you to connect that way.
The details of the environment are necessary to determine my recommendation on connecting (you will need local access to install anything, anyway). If you're on the public network, I'd want you to be using either something that includes encryption or which runs over an encrypted tunnel. However, if you're already on a VPN, then something like TightVNC would be sufficient.
