Perhaps there is an upgrade of your database user available? LOL But seriously, I would not build a new system today with a strict requirement that it "be a simple transition with no major changes to the UI or system overall to avoid confusing the 70+ y/o user." He is simply going to have to learn this new system, just like he once learned the old one.
