(and fliers)(and postcards)(yes, there is some NLUG relevance, I promise)

1} We'll start with the business cards:

250 for $10 via vistaprint.com if we snag 'em by Monday, May 19th. Tilghman has
a good design, which is an update from last year's cards; you can see' em here:

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/gswjttvifjbs2vb/AAABZi3rR9aVLhSqHc3sgc3Ha
(or here - http://goo.gl/ThXR8g - if you prefer)

Note that I was playing around with the template & tossed a possible
alternative into the dropbox as well (jx_sample.jpg - kinda sucky but you get
the idea). But why stop there?!? NOW is your opportunity to win a FABULOUS
PRIZE (of some sort) - Don't like the proposed design(s)? Think you can do
better? THEN HAVE AT IT! Design us some business cards posthaste; fame, fortune
and glorious glory galore will be yours forever! [1]

The template is here:

...and feel free to use other templates if you prefer. Let's make the deadline
11:00am central time, Sunday, May 18th; get your design(s) to me by then, I can
put 'em in the dropbox & we can decide which one(s) we want to use at the
PhreakNIC meeting. We'll announce the winner(s) after the meeting.

1a bonus round} Note that we aren't limited to one design; we could, for
example, have different backs (or entire cards - front & back) for promoting at
different cons:

Hypericon - http://hypericon.firechildren.net/ (June 13-15)
LibertyCon - http://www.libertycon.org/ (June 27-29)
DragonCon - http://dragoncon.org/ (Aug 29-Sep 01)
DerbyCon - https://www.derbycon.com/ (sep 24-28)

Even if we stick with the same fronts, the backs could have different QR codes
that would take you to a convention-specific page that has a promo or discount
(or something), only good during that convention (and possibly a day or two
after). Also, Andrew pointed out that Vistaprint has sales ALL THE TIME, so
focus on general PN18 cards first, then June conventions, then DragonCon &
DerbyCon. Unless someone comes up with something better, I'm going to
arbitrarily declare convention-specific business card design deadlines to be
noon, central time, 14 days prior to the start of each con:

Hypericon - Friday, May 30th deadline
LibertyCon - Friday, June 13th deadline
DragonCon - Friday, August 15th deadline
DerbyCon - Wednesday, September 10th deadline

2} Next we have fliers:

Amber came up with some nifty preliminary designs, based on Soviet-era Space
Race propaganda artwork; they're in the dropbox "fliers" folder. I think
something based on these designs would be especially fun for LibertyCon, which
has a reputation for being a somewhat conservative/right-wing sci-fi con (yes,
they exist). As for non-LibertyCon fliers, multiple designs targeted to
specific cons, plus a general design would seem the best route to take (just
like the business cards). Hypericon is fast approaching, so we should focus on
that one first; same flier design deadlines as business card deadlines.

3} Finally, we have postcards:

My thinking on this was to have multiple similar cards with different parts of
a crypto/coding challenge on each; to solve the whole thing, you'd need to find
and collaborate with folks who had received different portions of the code (ie
- different cards). This would hopefully encourage people to utilize the
various social media we have yet to fully exploit. Look for more details & info
in a follow-up message. Tilghman, what's the date we need these by, and when do
we usually mail them out?

4} Another bonus round - ROOM PARTIES (relevant to NLUG)

Jeremy (aka logickal23) suggested a PhreakNIC room party at Hypericon, which we
would use to spread the joy and glory that is PhreakNIC, as well as
Nashville2600, se2600, and all things related; sounds good to me. Also, since
the new Nashville Linux Users Group officers are all Nashville2600/PhreakNIC
members, I propose that PhreakNIC and NLUG have a joint room party for
propaganda/recruitment purposes and split the costs. Possibly even with the
Nashville Circuit Benders & a few other groups we have or are in the process of
recruiting. What say you, se2600/Nashville2600/PhreakNIC/NLUG readers? We can
double (at a minimum) our wholesome outreach goodness for one low price if we
work together.

Contest summary} Ahem:

Contest #1 = Best design for generic PhreakNIC 18 business cards wins a prize,
deadline 11:00am this Sunday; you can submit multiple designs, as well as
convention-specific designs too, but must have at least one generic all-purpose
design. Because we need these fast, it'll be a Really Good Prize (tm).
Contest #2a-d = Convention-specific business card designs by the above
specified deadlines. We'll award one prize for each winning convention-specific
design.
Contest #3 = Same as Contest #1, but for fliers.
Contest #4a-d = Same for Contest #2a-d, but for fliers.
Contest #5 = Postcards, deadline TBA.
Contest #6 = Most reasonable prize suggestions for Contests #1 through Contest
#6; yes, you may be determining your own prize(s). How meta (note the phrase
"reasonable" - we're not made of money).

Let the creative mayhem begin.

PS - re: [1] - Disclaimer: Note that we can't actually guarantee fame, fortune
or glorious glory galore forever, but we will give you all due credit/blame,
plus the aforementioned prize(s), once we come up with 'em. See "Contest #6"
above.

PPS - To prevent spamming the NLUG list too heavily, please post
non-NLUG-specific replies to (in order of preference)
[email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and/or me
personally.
