Yes, X can run over a network, but it's SLOW as molasses. NoMachine NX has
compression technology to optimize the performance for your network
bandwidth, much better compression than X alone.

I've used Attachmate Reflection X (formerly WRQ Reflection X) and
Hummingbird Exceed (my university used Exceed when I was enrolled there) to
connect to the MTSU mainframe (an HP 9000 V-Class server running HP-UX
B.11. I learned some of the quirks of HP-UX when I was attending there. The
computer science students had to use a seperate account created for them in
the class, and submit a line printer printout.

I swear by NoMachine. I just recently learned how to shadow the local
desktop over the network, and it's great for remote support or remote
access. I even have a NoMachine NX connection set up to spawn Evolution on
my Amazon EC2 Linux server to check my work email.

Hope this helps! If I were still in Nashville I'd offer to give another
talk about NX.
