First off, the pipeline should have a size associated with it, it should have a direction as well, and if you want to get silly, what about a capacity in BBL per hour? A depth tag would be good as well, but that is so variable it would be hard to tag. You'll need things like pigging stations (with pig shooters and pig catchers), cathodic protection nodes, block valves, pump stations, compressor stations. River crossings would be interesting... would you mark a pipeline as being in a tunnel where it runs under a river? 8) All of this would probably need a specialized map rendering engine, as most of the world is not interested in the location of pipelines. Most of the world would probably be amazed at how many pipelines run under their feet. I work in a field that supports the petrochemical industry, and I am amazed at the number of times the pipelines I work along cross other pipelines. It's like a spider's web.
