Yes, I know that, but realistically are the rest of the world's MUAs 
going to become PGP/MIME conformant - ever?

The problems are not so much with mutt itself but with the
infrastructure that has to be in place on the systems where it runs. I
don't own the systems (well I own one of them) so I can't dictate
whether PGP and/or MIME programs are available.
