I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but in Sun and Netscape DS, the 
userCertificate;binary attribute is used to store the user's email 
certificate.  Usually the entity that generates the certificate will 
also have the capability to publish it to the user's entry (Netscape CMS 
can do this).  If you get your user certs some other way, then I'm not 
sure how they get published to the user's entry in the directory.
