(in open access) you can find this paper that compares different approaches
for the estimation of deformation and for parallel transport. Explaining
that this topic is related more than it seems to a previous one regarding
the evaluation of local deformation could be too tedious. I just signal the
fact that while TPS interpolant is often used for simulating developmental
processes, it is actually evident that it does not possess very desirable
properties for doing that.
