I have written and maintain a homebrew tap that contains all the android packages as homebrew formulas:
https://github.com/toonetown/homebrew-android I don't know that you would want to use it directly (it's OS X only), but it does take a different approach - there are some scripts and xsl style sheets that operate on the actual SDK xml feed files (the same ones the android SDK tool uses). I have found this is a lot less "fragile". It also contains, for example, the locations and download hashes of the NDK package as well.
