I just pushed a change that will cause us to checkerboard differently,
and Anthony and I want to collect feedback from folks here to determine
if we should end up shipping it or not. Instead of showing the low-res
version of the page when we checkerboard (like when you pan quickly), we
will now just show the page background (hopefully). When the content is
finished rendering, it will then fade into place. The idea here is that
instead of appearing instantly, the fade-in will help smooth out the
otherwise jarring transition. The low-res tiles have always been a
constant source of bugs, and the GFX people don't like maintaining it,
so they are in favor of this. Panning performance with the fading tiles
also seems a bit better to me, but I want to hear what you guys think.
The change should be in tomorrow's Nightly.

Thanks,
James

My two cents:
The fading doesn't look bad, but for me it always seems to fade in from black, which makes it a bit more jarring. I.e. when scrolling quickly, I first see the page background colour in the checkerboarded area and then the rendered tiles fade in from black. I would have expected the tiles to fade in via the page background colour, too.

Also, speaking from the perspective of someone with a slightly under-powered phone (S3 Mini): When looking at a page that is complex enough to get me into heavy checkerboarding (i.e. content doesn't appear for at least several seconds): - Tiles often stop fading in and just pop up directly as they used to previously - Often, the low-res tiles would give enough clues for me to decide whether I should scroll on or wait for the full-res tiles to render. Now, I just have to stare at a blank page. What is of course a bit difficult to judge subjectively, though, is how much the removal of the low-res tiles speeds up the rendering of the full-res page content.

Cheers,
Jan
