Instructions to unsubscribe from this list at the end of the message - --------------------------------------------------------------------- In order to boot straight to the GUI, the file /etc/inittab must have "id:5:initdefault" - if the number is not 5 it won't go to GUI mode. Whatever you do, don't change the number to anything except 1-5!
It's also possible that you don't have KDM, XDM or GDM correctly installed - these are the graphical login screens that you normally see (the KDE, X and Gnome versions respectively). As for why you can't start X as non-root users, I have no idea. What happens if you just type in "startx"? Do you get an error message?
