There are many reasons why someone might actually look at replacing
such a setup, I would vote in favor of : unmanageable and support is
out anyway, so let's move it to something we know. Now, the "we" here
is quite important depending on the time you plan on staying in the
place since your successor might have cisco skills and not OpenBSD
ones.
I'm quite aware why someone MIGHT go down this path, however I'd like
to know why the OP thinks he should recommend this path. That's the
question I'd be asking if he worked for me.
Anyone been around for awhile would recognise I'm a long time OpenBSD
proponent. However my day job entails quite a bit of CLI time on
heavy Cisco, Foundry, Juniper, blah, blah, .... gear. This stuff is
purpose bulit to switch and/or forward packets. Since the OP works
at a uni which could afford a 6506 originally I still ask "what nut
are you trying to crack"?
