in dmesg I see messages about errors in the video driver, along these
lines:

[17132.955355] radeon 0000:01:05.0: r600_packet3_check:1330 invalid cmd stream

[17132.955357] [drm:radeon_cs_ioctl] *ERROR* Invalid command stream !

0xFFFFFFFF no cb for 0

in .xsession-errors I see many programs complain about being shut by the
abrupt X death

and also

(mhwaveedit:17985): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_window_type: assertion
`GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed

I tried without compiz but it does the same. I tried also with
windowmaker, and I made a discover: since I changed this monitor
(previously I had a 4:3 one) I had to add some xrandr lines to my
~/.xprofile, otherwise gnome-display-properties failed to identify the
monitor and its correct resolution (1440x900).

Switching to wmaker to eliminate gnome from the equation I noticed that
at 1024x768 the problem was gone, and using 1440x900 the problem was
back, in wmaker too.

So I think there's something wrong in the video card/monitor combo, or
in the video driver... I'm a profane, but it seems like mhwe refuse to
resize/zoom to a horizontal resolution that "should'nt be there" (in
fact wasn't there until I forced it in ~/.xprofile)

A picture (in motion) is worth thousand words :)

Thank you for your prompt answer and, of course also for your very nice
audio editor (I use it a lot).

Cheers
