Unfortunately they are very different: MAPI is a very different sort of protocol which basically provides direct access to the Exchange server, which no enterprise will allow outside their intranet. ActiveSync is designed for sync, is limited in what it can do (deliberately) and is designed to work through firewalls/gateways. And a bunch of other stuff (like administrators can limit sync to devices which report that they provide a remote-wipe feature, etc).
