Look up the good, ugly and bad plugin sets from gstreamers. The differences are explained here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GStreamer
There are other plugins like the broadcom one that are not in the plugin packs and others that you need a license for like the Fluendo codecs. Enjoy!
