MI Changing projection of maps imported from ESRI Shape files

I am trying to convert some of my esri shape files into MapInfo Tab files. Using the universal translator, I am able to import them, but they always end up with non-earth projections. I want to convert the projection. When I do, however, all shape information is lost and I simply end up with a geometric object representing the topology of the original map, i.e., all regions reduce to regular geometric figures like squares and triangles.
