I'm subscribed to some Google Groups that are basically groups for members and activists of some NGOs I am (or was in the past) involved with. Never got any spam from these groups, still don't getting any now. Some of these groups are open, anybody can subscribe, others are closed and have subscribers added by admin only. No difference in (basically zero) amount of spam received from them.
