The firewalls are not supposed to protect a mail system only (then it would not need DNS rebinding protection), but a whole network, including mail systems.

That's an argument for not putting your mail system behind that firewall.

A mail server and a personal computer have very different needs for protection and tolerance for upstream data corruption. The only reason to make them live under the same network strictures is an unachievable desire for simplicity.
