The reason for the Microsoft server being involved is that's the way our Systems folks insisted we set it up. So, main to our particular domain goes through that and is routed to our server. The reason we didn't use the REST API is that we had code that worked (or at least that we thought worked). I've recommended to the site maintainers that they update their code to use the API and we'll deal with these things manually until that's done.
