The "Maintainer" field says specifically about the package maintainer, not the original author. If you are repackaging something for Maemo and wants to maintain credits for the original maintainer, just move the original field to the "XSBC-Original-Maintainer" field, as Ubuntu maintainers do (see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuDevelopment/FAQ#What%20does%20XSBC-Original-Maintainer%20mean?) If you don't change the Maintainer field, users might think that they should contact the original maintainers for any problems with your packaging modifications (for instance), and that person might not be prepared for giving this support.
