A donation is voluntary. No one should feel obligated to do it and it's not a requirement for using the app. Yet, if someone wants to show appreciation to the developer, no matter if it's new app, a port or just mod, with a monetary donation, it shouldn't be too difficult for him/her to do it. Any dev who feels that this goes against his principles, could always add a "Please do not donate for this". ;-)
