I think you're right, Marius. I subsequently found that using dpkg's purge 
argument instead of remove caused the reinstall to work as I'd expect. So in 
the real world, users will be at the mercy of whichever option the package 
manager uses, which will affect what files are left on the machine after 
removal, but on balance that's a lower priority than getting it working in 
the  first place...
