Well, the drive spins up and doesn't make any rude noises so I've narrowed it down to the cable or the scsi card, and it is a card although there is an onboard scsi connector which goes through the back for scanners etc. I've moded the card into another slot and get the same result. The cable is really flimsy, almost papery so it might well be that. Since the drive won't mount, I figure it's the connection to the motherboard. If it was the drive, I think it would say unreadale or some such thing. I'll check the cable pin by pin tomorrow and try to find a copy of disk warrior. I think I have an adaptec pci scsi card somewhere in case the card is fried. May not work on the G3 but it should on my pc although the interface looks kind of proprietary.
