OS for older Mac

I have a 7300/180 running OS 8.1 which is networked with a newer iMac.  
I would like to upgrade the OS on the older machine to give me more 
flexibility when files are sent over from the iMac -  ie. Appleworks 6 
files can't be run on OS 8.1.  Would it be better to run
OS 8.5 (8.6) or OS 9.0 (9.1)?  Is the machine (120Mb of RAM) too slow 
to run OS 9?
