3MB/s is about the limit of 2.4Ghz 11n. The 11ac is dual band
(2.4/5Ghz) and multiple streams. My laptop gets about 60MB/s to my
home routers over dual channel 11ac. I have one router that can do
1.4Gb.s but I don't have any clients that will do that. Instead I can
use two clients at about 700Mb/s with it.

Prices for this stuff is all over the map. 700Mb/s 11ac modules are over $10.
Cheapest 2.4Ghz 11n I have seen is $0.80.
