Thank you! Thus far I have always had to deal with the problem in a rush (think
in terms of last-minute corrections/changes) so I usually used a few simple
replacements of two spaces by one. However, using regex makes much more sense.

In any case, without the visual cues it is easy to forget that such corrections
are needed. And yes, I know I can tell Writer to display spaces (the light blue
center dots that you have in your screenshot), but that -- at least for me --
makes the text less legible, thus increasing the chance of missing other
(grammatical etc.) problems.
