Last year I bought a couple of new AMD desktop systems using APUs
and low-end motherboards. With those LFS is sufficient to boot and
get a network connection (but only for 80x25, using the framebuffer
and later X requires firmware from BLFS).
Laptops, particularly those without a wired network, may be entirely
different.
