The initial trigger for this was trying to import 60K images (~550GB of data) into Shotwell from an NTFS partition on an internal drive. However, just copying the files from the drive to my home folder also triggered the kernel panic so it does not appear related to Shotwell. To rule out problems on the drive itself, I booted into windows, copied the files onto another (NTFS) drive external drive. This completed successfully in Windows. Rebooting into Ubuntu and trying the import again from the external drive resulted in another kernel panic. Remounting the drive using the fuse driver ntfs-3g 'fixed' the problem. So I can only assume the error resides in the kernel ntfs3 driver.
