Public bug reported:

When doing significant file operations on an ntfs partition, the kernel
will panic. The initial trigger for this was trying to import 60K images
(~550GB of data) into Shotwell from an NTFS partition on an internal
drive. However, just copying the files from the drive to my home folder
also triggered the kernel panic so it does not appear related to
Shotwell. To rule out problems on the drive itself, I booted into
windows, copied the files onto another (NTFS) drive external drive. This
completed successfully in Windows. Rebooting into Ubuntu and trying the
import again from the external drive resulted in another kernel panic.

Remounting the drive using the fuse driver ntfs-3g 'fixed' the problem.
So I can only assume the error resides in the kernel ntfs3 driver.
